Michael Schumacher celebrated winning
a record sixth world title yesterday — by trashing a hospitality
suite.
He and brother Ralf left a trail of debris with
boozy hi-jinks after the Japanese Grand Prix.
The paddock was strewn with Bottles, Michael hijacked
a forklift truck and Ralf threw a TV through a window.
Cleaners had to spend hours clearing up a mess of
trodden food, shattered glass and spilled booze.
A witness said: “They looked as if they had
gone wild. It was like a war zone.”
Racing drivers normally drink little and are well
behaved. But the incident, which also involved French star Olivier
Panis, showed that not only football has its unwelcome side.
The German aces caused chaos after Ferrari’s
Michael, 34, clinched enough points at Suzuka to make him the most
successful driver ever.
He broke the record of five championships set by
Argentinian legend Juan Manuel Fangio in the 1950s.
Ralf, 28, had been livid with his brother for almost
squeezing him off the circuit — and the pair decided to patch
it up over a drink.
The witness added: “It started with them throwing
drinks and escalated.
“Michael,
who was smoking a big cigar, handed Ralf the TV and he threw it
out the window. Michael
and Olivier picked up a couple of tables and chairs and lobbed them
at the broken window.”
It is understood Ralf jumped into an on-loan BMW
to drive to their nearby hotel.
But Michael, who also sent a fridge toppling over,
hopped on to the forklift for a spin round the paddock.
He then pulled Ralf out of the BMW driver’s
seat and jokingly took the wheel — but did not drive off.
The
Suzuka race is renowned for drivers letting their hair down at the
end of the season, but antics are usually confined to chucking water
over each other.
