In
yesterday's warm-up, just prior to final qualifying Michael Schumacher
posted the quickest time in 1’22”210. Therefore, when
the Ferrari man was just about the only front runner not to go quicker
in the one lap qualifying shoot-out, the Scuderia engineers were
keen to find out why. Eventually, after lengthy analysis of all
the car’s data, the fault was traced to the air pressure in
the tyres. Before each run, tyre pressures are set to a formula
which allows for them to warm up on the “out” lap from
the pits, reaching optimum operating temperature at the start of
the critical timed lap. On this occasion, Schumacher’s tyres
took longer than expected to reach that correct temperature. This
explains why the German complained of lack of grip. Eventually,
through running and cornering forces, the temperatures did reach
their optimum. That can be verified from the fact Michael’s
times over the final sections improved to the expected level. Of
course, this does not alter the fact that he starts from eighth
on the grid, but at least the team now has an understanding of what
exactly caused the problem.
