Race legend Sir Jackie Stewart saw the Ferrari ace crash out of Sunday's Australian Grand Prix at 150mph, ripping off a wheel and the rear wing as his red racer peeled open like a gutted fish against a crash barrier.
Stewart believes the 37-year-old has been pushing the limits of safety and good fortune for too long with a false sense of security that the safety standards of modern F1 machines will always protect him from injury.
"Schumacher made a lot of mistakes during the weekend and you are not allowed to make mistakes that frequently at this level," said Stewart.
"That was a very big accident, but in our day we couldn't afford to do it because you got killed.
"You needed to have a clearer limit of your expectations because you couldn't possibly afford to go off the road.
"Count the number of times Jim Clark went off the road. It didn't happen very often, but when he did he got killed. If you take liberties like that, it bites you. Eventually it bit Michael." |
