Ferrari are due to take delivery
of a spare F2005 gearbox on Saturday, but the team are hoping to
get through the day with the repaired original unit in Rubens Barrichello's
car and then fit the new one for Sunday.
A bearing problem stopped Barrichello running in
Friday's first practice session, and the damage was so severe that
he was not able to take part in the afternoon.
The team is working overnight to make the gearbox
serviceable.
The spare was finished late in Italy and was only
due to be on hand as a spare for race day. The parc ferme rules
should allow the team to fit it after Saturday's first qualifying
without penalty - as long as the damage to the old one is deemed
genuine and the new one is identical.
Where it might become a little difficult is that,
should the repaired box survive Saturday, the team might find it
hard to convince the FIA that it is damaged and that they should
be allowed to make a precautionary change. |
