Ferrari's Formula One test driver
Luca Badoer could drive a third Sauber in grand prix practice later
this season, team boss Peter Sauber said on Friday.
All but the top four teams are allowed to run three
cars on race Fridays this season but Ferrari-powered Sauber have
resisted the option on cost grounds.
Sauber told a news conference at the season-opening
Australian Grand Prix that the team lacked the infrastructure to
run three cars properly but recognised that the position could change.
"It is possible," he said.
"When we drive with the third driver it is
important that we have a driver with experience who has the knowledge
of the circuit. Badoer for example."
Ferrari, as champions, cannot run a third car to
gain track data but could benefit by offering Badoer's services
as the Sauber is very similar to their 2003 car and uses the same
Bridgestone tyres.
The
Italian holds the Formula One record for the number of starts without
ever scoring a point, 50 races for Minardi between 1993 and 1999.
