After
today's race in Australia straight away people have started to say
that the F2003 GA should be wheeled out as soon as possible as the
other teams have now catched up and is now on the pace of the 2002
car.
But
looking back at the race you have to look at the fact that the F2002
when it wasn't stuck behind the slower cars of Raikkonen, Frentzen
etc then the F2002 was the fastest car on the track. Catching the
Mclaren and Williams wasn't a problem for Schumacher and even despite
going off and damaging the side skirts and floor board he was still
able to keep up behind Kimi and Juan Pablo.
The
race conditions today really mixed things up and bought the field
closer to each other than it would normally of done if it was dry.
Ferrari were on the wrong tyres from the start and when it came
to changing there tyres to slicks they left it far to late and by
the time Schumacher had come in then Montoya was on the back of
him.
Going
back to qualifying Mclaren were running a very light fuel load as
we saw them both pit within the first 4 laps of the race, yet they
both qualified towards the back of the grid. Ferrari ran a heavier
fuel load and were able to do a long stint at the beginning of the
race so the huge gap in qualifying on Saturday seems even more impressive
than it actually was made out to be.
Both
Williams and Mclaren struggled with the Michelin tyres during the
race and certainly the Williams still isn't fantastic judging by
Ralf Schumacher's performance today so the first race in Australia
still doesn't show who really are top dogs this season and who has
the car to beat.
