| On a drying Catalunya Circuit, the opening practice session for Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix saw Ferrari’s to the fore once more, although only nine drivers set times in what must be considered an unrepresentative session.
The hour began slowly, with the circuit officially declared ‘wet’, and most of the 28 runners took to the track, perhaps the most familiar to all the drivers, for an exploratory lap. All returned to the pits without completing a lap.
As the minutes ticked by a few of the ‘Friday’ men began to put in some laps, among them Anthony Davidson for Honda and Alex Wurz for Williams-Cosworth. These two were soon joined by the ever-improving Robert Kubica in the BMW-Sauber, as well as Robert Doornbos for Red Bull, Neel Jani for the sister Toro Rosso outfit and Giorgio Mondini, this weekend’s choice for MF1 Racing.
These six circulated on the drying track, each improving as a dry line appeared, and were joined by Takuma Sato and Franck Montagny in the Super Aguri’s. Montagny failed to complete a lap, his car stopping out on the circuit.
With a few minutes to go the Ferrari’s, somewhat surprisingly, took to the track, and Michael Schumacher and Felipe Massa instantly topped the timesheets, the Brazilian just ahead on 1:15.796, his team leader behind on 1:16.099.
Wurz was the quickest of the following bunch, just a few thousandths of a second behind Schumacher, with Kubica a further half a second behind.
Davidson took fifth place, comfortably ahead of the trailing Doornbos, Jani Mondini and Sato.
Kimi Raikkonen did not even leave the pits in his McLaren, the only man not to take to the track at all.
