San Marino Grand Prix 17th-20th April - Tony Moffett Qualifying Report

Record Pole: M. Schumacher - 1'21''091 (2002, Ferrari)
2002 Pole: M. Schumacher - 1'21''091 (Ferrari)
2002 Podium: M. Schumacher - R. Barrichello - R. Schumacher

Michael Schumacher took the pole for tomorrow’s San Marino grand prix in what resembled qualifying with the old rules. The pole was swapped several times as the last drivers made their respective runs and the outcome satisfied the partisan Ferrari crowd.

Starting 2nd to Schumacher’s Ferrari is brother Ralf in the Williams. Rubens Barrichello placed his Ferrari 3rd, splitting the Williams team with Juan Montoya in 4th. Mark Webber continues to show his prowess in the Jaguar having taken pole briefly and ending up in a solid 5th position. Raikkonen starts from 6th fairing much better than his teammate Coulthard who got his car out of shape and lost enough time to see him unable to post better than a 12th place time.

Jacques Villeneuve in the BAR out qualified his teammate by taking the 7th place, with Fernando Alonso in the Renault 8th and Jenson Button in the 2nd BAR 9th.

Olivia Panis managed to grid his Toyota from 10th place followed by Nick Heidfeld in the Sauber 11th. As previously mentioned David Coulthard starts his McLaren from 12th with the 2nd Toyota of Cristiano Da Matta in 13th.

Heinz-Harold Frentzen in the 2nd Sauber will start from 14th with Brazilian Antonio Pizzonia in the 2nd Jaguar 15th. Jarno Trulli posted a disappointing 16th place time in the 2nd of the Renaults. Equally disappointing is the 17th place starting slot for last race’s winner Giancarlo Fisichella in the 1st of the 2 Jordans! Justin Wilson, who was the 1st driver to qualify, managed an 18th place grid position. His was the only Minardi to officially qualify as Jos Verstappen damaged his car in an off during his run. He will start last, behind Ralph Firman who once again saved a precariously swerving Jordan to take 19th spot for tomorrow’s race.

Rumors of rain did not materialize thankfully and the Ferrari fans see their men starting 1st and 3rd hoping for a repeat of last years 1-2 finish I am sure. Perhaps Ralf can finish in 3rd to duplicate the podium from 2002?
