Interlagos was wet, very wet
and the teams all have one set of wet tyres for the weekend –
intermediates. For the conditions these could be very little use.
Many drivers, including Coulthard and Trulli, threatened to refuse
to go on the track but all the drivers took part in the session.
Raikkonen
was first to take the damp track and put in a good lap to set the
standard for the following drivers.
With
the wet weather and intermittent rain all the drivers were up against
it and the first qualifying session was a rather farcical parade
of drivers merely trying to stay on the track and not even attempting
to put in a hot lap for fear of crashing off.
Both
Coulthard and Montoya slipped up on the wet surface and Montoya
was half a second up on the then leader, Raikkonen, until he lost
it on turn six and was left over three seconds off the pace.
Barrichello
came out to the delight of the home fans and looked set to claim
the fastest time for the day with a blistering – in the conditions
– lap which left him 1.3 seconds faster than the young Finn.
Then
the rain strengthened and both Scumachers, Trulli and Frentzen struggled
to find any grip on the track, although the Ferrari of Schumacher
did manage to put in the fifth fastest time.
Button
suffered the most, totally losing the car and taking out two signs
with him, leaving debris on the track and meaning he will be first
out on the track for Saturday qualifying.
The
real surprises of the session were the Jaguars with Pizzonia completing
a decent lap to be eighth quickest and Webber beating the Brazilian’s
time to give him the final lap for tomorrow’s qualifying.
With
rain forecast for the rest of the weekend and the teams opting for
intermediate tyres Brazil could prove a very dangerous race for
the drivers.
