Malaysian GP 16th March-19th March 2006 - Saturday Practice 2.1 Report

Length: 5.443 km
Number of Laps: 56 (310.408 Km)
Best Lap: JP. Montoya - 1'34''223 (2004, Williams)
Record Pole: M. Schumacher - 1'33''074 (2004, Ferrari)
2005 Pole: F. Alonso - 1'35''090 (Renault)
2005 Podium: F. Alonso - J. Trulli - N. Heidfeld

Today's practice session saw Michael Schumacher take top slot. The German set a time of 1:34.126 which was followed by both Renaults. Alonso took 2nd position with a 1:34.180 and Fisichella took 3rd with a 1:34.585.

Honda's Jenson Button was next to impress with the Englishman taking 4th with 1:34.616, however his team-mate, Rubens Barrichello could only manage 15th position with a 1:36.655.

Red Bull's Christian Klien surprised all today taking 5th with a 1:34.915. David Coulthard followed with a 1:35.639 which slotted him into 9th position.

Kimi Raikkonen was next on the list for McLaren, taking 6th with a 1:34.854. However, Juan Pablo Montoya only set a time of 1:37.053 which put him in 16th. One has to wonder if his engine is still troubling him or if it is the tyres as was stated by the team earlier in the week. Poor performance in comparison.

The biggest surprise of the session was Ralf Schumacher, who after setting times in the 1:37s, managed to improve his time by 2 seconds to a 1:35.040, which was good enough for 7th. Jarno Trulli also improved his time to a 1:35.690 which put him in 10th. Things may be looking brighter for Toyota if they can keep this performance up.

The Williams duo slotted themselves into 8th and 11th with Rosberg being the quicker of the pair. The BMW-Sauber pair of Villeneuve and Heidfeld finished the session in 12th and 13th. Liuzzi and Speed claimed 14th and 19th for Toro Rosso.

The other Ferrari driver, Felipe Massa, only claimed 17th position. In retrospect, it looks as though there are problems for the Brazilian. Albers and Monteiro took 18th and 20th for Midland. At the very botton of the timesheets went the pairing of Sato and Ide for Super Aguri.
