Malaysian Grand Prix 20th-23rd March - Dawn Barnes Qualifying Report 2

Length: 5.543 km
Number of Laps: 56 (310.408 Km)
Best Lap: J. Montoya - 1'38''049 (2002, Williams BMW)
Record Pole: M. Schumacher - 1'35''220 (2001, Ferrari)
2002 Pole: M. Schumacher - 1'35''266 (Ferrari)
2002 Podium: R. Schumacher - J. Montoya - M. Schumacher

The surprise pace of Renault in qualifying leaves 21-year-old Fernando Alonso on pole position with team-mate, Trulli, sharing the front row for tomorrow’s second GP.

Both Renaults put in terrific laps which left even Michael Schumacher unable to respond and only able to gain third on the grid.

Ferrari number two was guided to fifth by Barrichello with Coulthard splitting the Ferraris in fourth.

New boy Firman qualified in last place behind the Minardis while the unfortunate Ralf Schumacher was well off the pace finishing with a grid position of 17 just in front of the small Italian team.

With the new qualifying procedures still to settle down speculation about tomorrow’s race and team strategies is varied but the belief in the pits is that Renault ran a light fuel load just to grab the qualifying glory meaning that they will be pitting early tomorrow and losing any advantage gained.

Top 6: Alonso, Trulli, M Schumacher, Couthard, Barrichello, Heidfeld
