The
top five was the usual suspects with Montoya the third fastest,
then Raikkonen and Coulthard of McLaren. The surprises of the session
were the slow laps from Ralf Schumacher and Villeneuve who were
thirteenth and fifteenth fastest respectively, both well behind
their team mates.
Jaguar
had a bad day with only Webber posting a time, Pizzonia failed to
record anything and will be first out on track on Saturday.
The
Saubers showed that they are the closest team to Renault in the
middle of the pack at present, while Jordan appear to have had a
considerable drop off from where they were last season. At this
rate they will have an even greater struggle securing sponsorship
for next season.
New
boy da Matta out-qualified Panis in the Toyota and the Minardis
finished in their usual positions, propping up the times for the
rest of the teams.
In
the UK I would like to thank ITV who have ingeniously decided not
to show any of the Malaysian qualifying live and will instead show
the first qualifying tonight at midnight and then they will show
Saturday qualifying late on Saturday afternoon. The only event they
will show live is the actual race at 6.45am on Sunday morning.
Your
commitment to F1 is astounding ITV, I hope your advertising revenue
is lower than ever....
