2004 Pole: M. Schumacher - 1'24''408 (Ferrari)
2004 Podium: M. Schumacher - R. Barrichello - F. Alonso

Saturday morning’s first session of practice for the Australian Grand Prix was a non-event due to a Melbourne-monsoon that soaked the Albert Park circuit.

However the standing water didn’t deter Minardi’s two rookies who, after spending day one in the pit lane due to a legal battle, were keen to get laps under their belts.

The pairing of Patrick Friesacher and Christijan Albers were the only early runners, but as the sky brightened more of their rivals emerged from the pit lane.

It was seven times world champion Michael Schumacher that ended the 45-minute run on top with his Ferrari team-mate Rubens Barrichello close behind.

But the Scuerdia had little competition with only 12 drivers setting a time.

While not many men recorded a result, plenty had time off the circuit with the tricky conditions catching out Albers, Narain Karthikeyan and Mark Webber amongst others.
