Australian Grand Prix 6th-9th March 2003 - Tony Moffett Qualifying 2 Report

2002 Pole: R. Barrichello - 1'25''843 (Ferrari)
2002 Podium: M. Schumacher - J. Montoya - K. Raikkonen

Michael Schumacher took the pole for the Grand Prix of Australia with a time of 1m27.173s with teammate Barrichello qualifying 2nd just .245s behind. This was the 51st pole for the 5 time champion. The 20 cars completed an uneventful session in just over 49 minutes.

The coverage included more in car camera shots which made for a very interesting perspective for the viewer. As expected the higher fuel load resulted in a slower lap time compared to last year. The rest of the field is comprised of a different distribution of teams than we are used to seeing, but I find this interesting.

The 2 Ferraris are the only cars in the 1m27s area.

Montoya in the Williams qualified a fine 3rd with Frentzen in the Sauber taking 4th with a solid run. Olivia Panis in the Toyota placed himself 5th with Villeneuve 6th in the BAR. 8th position goes to Heidfeld in the Sauber followed by Button in the 2nd BAR.

Ralf Schumacher managed to qualify 9th despite an off that cost time precious time. Alonso in the Renault starts his 1st GP in 10th with Coulthard in the McLaren 11th. The 2nd Renault driven by Trulli starts 12th with Fisichella in the Jordan behind him in 13th.

Local hero Mark Webber makes his 1st start with Jaguar in 14th spot. Raikkonen starts 15th after a major departure from the track being very lucky to have kept control and saving the lap. The 2nd rookie being Da Matta starts the Toyota in 16th position with fellow new comer Firman in the Jordan in 17th. The 2nd Jaguar of Pizzonia grids from the 18th position with the returning Verstappen 19th after both Minardis failed to post a time. The last position is that of rookie Wilson in the 2nd Minardi.

The efficiency of qualifying was impressive, in my opinion. A more diverse field is also evident despite the powerful presence of the 2 Ferraris and the Williams. Not knowing the fuel status of any of the cars nor their tire condition leaves questions about how well these cars will fare during the race. I think the GP will be a good one for all.
