Fernando Alonso remained on top in the second free practice session at Indianapolis, this time leading a McLaren one-two ahead of teammate Lewis Hamilton.

Felipe Massa had led the way for Ferrari for much of the session after an early run on soft tyres, but he was pushed down to third in the final quarter of an hour as the McLarens switched to the softer tyres for their final runs.

Hamilton was first to usurp Massa, beating the Ferrari by a tenth of a second, before Alonso grabbed the top spot with a 1:12.156, 0.153 seconds faster than his teammate.

Massa and Hamilton were among several drivers to have an excursion at Turn 11 during the session, with the same corner also catching out Mark Webber and Nick Heidfeld in quick succession.

Webber then stopped at track with mechanical problems just after the hour mark, while his Red Bull teammate David Coulthard was fortunate to avoid contact with Jarno Trulli in a near-miss at Turn 1 late in the session.

Kimi Raikkonen was fourth for Ferrari, ahead of Heidfeld, Coulthard and Nico Rosberg - who showed promising practice form for Williams for the third successive race.

Heikki Kovalainen and the two Hondas completed the top ten.

After his impressive performance in the morning, Robert Kubica's stand-in Sebastian Vettel could only manage 11th for BMW in the second session.
