| The usual Friday morning routine set in as test drivers Anthony Davidson, for Honda, and Alex Wurz, for Williams, set the early pace at the Hungaroring this morning.
They were without sparring partner Robert Kubica, the BMW driver in a race seat this weekend in place of the injured Jacques Villeneuve, and one of ten drivers not to set a time.
In the end, though, it was Kimi Raikkonen in the improving Mclaren Mercedes who set the fastest time, a 1;21.624 that will be easily eclipsed as the rubber lays onto this notorious dustbowl, comfortably ahead of Davidson’s Honda (1;22.396).
Michael Schumacher put in a couple of late efforts to clock third fastest time (1:22.499) with Pedro de la Rosa fourth quickest in the second McLaren.
The remainder were the usual mix of test drivers – Wurz, Robert Doornbos (Red Bull) and Marcus Winkelhock for Midland all in the top ten, with Neel Jani’s Toro Rosso in eleventh place – and race drivers getting a feel for the circuit, with both Honda’s (Rubens Barrichello and Jenson Button) and Toyota’s (Jarno Trulli and Ralf Schumacher) having a look later on.
Neither Williams, Renault, BMW-Sauber or the Red Bull race drivers attempted to venture out.
This afternoon’s session may give us a better idea of the status quo here in Hungary. |
